The Principal Preparation Program provides a comprehensive competency-based approach to assess and enhance leadership capacity of assistant principals and district administrators aspiring to a principalship. Participants acquire both technical and adaptive skills in instructional leadership, operational leadership, school leadership, and urban leadership.
The Principal Preparation Program has been granted full approval by the Florida Department of Education and is recognized as a quality leadership preparation program.
The program includes components specifically designed to prepare high-performing candidates:
- Summer Leadership Institute
- Monthly Professional Development with experts on a select topic
- 360° Assessment and Leadership Growth Plan
- Field Experiences
- Standards Portfolio
- Instructional Rounds
- Professional Readings and Reflections
- Job Shadowing
An annual announcement of program availability is made each spring though the M-DCPS Weekly Briefings. Interested individuals complete an application submission, eligibility screening and interview process. Selected candidates are notified of acceptance into the program.
Candidates participate in a 10-day Summer Leadership Institute as an introduction to the yearlong program. The orientation introduces expectations, guidelines, and completion requirements. Professional development activities feature presentations and activities to increase knowledge, awareness and expertise in operational and instructional leadership.
Successful program completion is based on the satisfactory completion of all required components and demonstrated mastery of the 10 Florida Principal Leadership Standards.
